Singapore – New Hub for Education

Singapore universities have the best universities in Asia & two of its universities come among top ten in ten in the World. The education system in Singapore is quite different from the west but is delivering good results. Since its independence in 1965, Singapore has continuously evolved its education system. Its emphasis on education partly reflects Singapore’s virtual lack of natural resources. Singapore needs to develop its human resource and manpower capability in its continuing quest to build a knowledge-based economy.

Singapore education system is centrally governed compared to the autonomous system in the West. Education in Singapore universities is managed by the Ministry of Education. It controls the development and administration of state schools receiving government funding. And also has an advisory and supervisory role in respect of private schools. For both private and state schools, there are variations in the extent of autonomy in their curriculum, scope of government aid and funding, tuition burden on the students, and admission policy.

Universities in Singapore

Singapore has six autonomous local universities – University of Singapore & Nan yang Technical University being the best. Apart from these, many foreign universities have established campuses in Singapore such as the Chicago Business School, Yale University, and the University of Wales. These universities have established offshore campuses in  Singapore universities. This is to provide local and foreign in particular Asian students the opportunity to obtain a Western university education at a fraction of the cost it would take to study in Canada, the UK, the USA or Australia.

Why is Singapore Universities attractive for education?

Lower tuition fees along with residence cost are the most important factor. Cost of getting higher education in Singapore is close to half than in any equivalent university in the west. Apart from that, there are many other attractive options to choose from – government of Singapore. For foreign students, tuition fees can be further reduced by choosing the option of working in Singapore after completion of course for some duration.

Singapore has good work opportunities and its universities are flexible with the curriculum. Many courses provided by National University of Singapore & Nanyang technical university has the option of both full time & part time. All this makes to avail good education at affordable & feasible cost for Asian students.

NUS & NTU

National University of Singapore (NUS) is ranked among the top universities in Asia by both the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. According to the latest 2018 QS World University Rankings, NUS is placed 15th in the world and 2nd in Asia.

It has Campuses – Kent Ridge, Bukit Timah and Outram which consist of 13 undergraduate Schools, 4 Graduate schools & 30 University-level Research Institutes and Centers. Altogether, it houses 2400 faculties, 3500 research staff which guides more than thirty thousand undergraduate & graduate students.

NTU is a comprehensive and research-intensive university, with over 33,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The University is organized into eight colleges and schools. Two of them the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine – set up jointly with Imperial College London. NTU’s strongest faculties are in engineering and business. The NTU College of Engineering was ranked 2nd and 4th in the world by both the Academic Ranking of World Universities and QS World University Rankings respectively. NTU’s Nanyang Business School is Singapore’s top business school. It has emerged 24th globally in the Financial Times ranking and 1st in Singapore for 13 consecutive years in the Economist rankings.

With all these big achievements, low cost of education and various government supports – Singapore deserves one serious consideration before choosing a place for higher education.
